Pet Gundogs

April 5, 2016

At Central Bark we run an increasingly popular Gundog Class.  Aimed at pet and working dogs alike the course offers a good grounding for working breeds. The class is structured to enable owners to train and 'manage' a dog with working drive and instincts.

Training sessions  run for 1 hour each week, therefore the outcome of training is somewhat dependable on what the dog is doing outside of class. It is important that dogs who hunt, chase and are ignoring recall are not simply allowed to do as they please unless they are 'in training'.

If this is the case it is unfair to expect him or her to improve, simply because he is enrolled on a training class for 1 hour per week.

Furthermore, the more chance they have to ignore you and reward themselves with the adrenalin rush of a chase/hunt, the more likely they are to repeat the behaviour.

Those which are absconding on a regular basis, whether it be after fur and feather, other dogs or simply because they have hit and interesting scent must be restrained in some way, shape or form. An enclosed exercise area is ideal, but not accesible to most people. Using a longline (not a flexi leash) is the next best thing.

Alongside our Gundog class we offer Recall Workshops, Junior Training and Private Sessions to help you rebuild your relationship with your dog and hopefully to once again be able to enjoy the great outdoors. You can contact us for more information or to book an appointment.

There are many ways to keep your physically and mentally exercise your dog without 'free running'. The Totally Gundogs website is a fantastic source of information for pet and working gundog owners.
