The Greatest Dog Show on the Earth?

It is the opening day of Crufts 2026, and that familiar buzz is in the air. Dog lovers and competitors from across the globe are descending on the NEC to shop, learn, and—for the lucky few—take home a trophy.

I’ll admit, my relationship with Crufts is complicated. While I appreciate the incredible shopping and the wealth of educational resources, I find myself caught between admiration and unease. Even though the Kennel Club is making strides in improving breed health and welfare standards, there are still sights in the ring that don't sit quite right with me.

The Atmosphere: Pressure vs. Performance

Large-scale events like this inevitably involve a lot of waiting about or rushing around. For some dogs, the sensory overload of a packed indoor arena is a far cry from the outdoor spaces where they usually train.

  • The Stress Factor: While many dogs are expertly socialized and take the crowds in their stride, the noise and confinement can be a significant stressor.

  • The Human Element: Unfortunately, high stakes can lead to high tempers. It’s disheartening to see sharp lead pulls or harsh handling from frustrated owners. When I see that lack of patience, I can’t help but wince.

The Skill and the Spirit

On the flip side, the level of dedication on display is staggering. Dog sports at this level require years of daily training and a dog with a very specific drive.

Today, I’m watching Day 1 of the Obedience competition, and it’s a breath of fresh air.

  • Many of these dogs are mixed breeds.

  • The handlers and dogs look genuinely relaxed.

  • Even when a routine goes sideways, the bond is so strong that the dog doesn't even notice; they just keep going.

Watching the novice levels is a great reminder that with enough patience, any owner and dog can have their "15 minutes of fame."

A Call for Higher Standards

We must continue to pressure the Kennel Club to evolve and call out any unnecessary distress or unacceptable handling. This advocacy shouldn't stop at the arena doors, either. Whether it’s your vet, groomer, dog walker, or trainer, if you aren't comfortable with how they are treating your dog, you have to speak up. We only achieve higher industry standards by demanding them in every space.

Love it or hate it, Crufts reminds us of one universal truth: at the end of the day, every single person there goes home with—or to—the best dog in the world.
